Until now, the management of container images was often associated with tool changes, increased administrative effort and non-transparent costs. With the launch of Bitbucket Packages as a native container registry in Bitbucket Cloud, Atlassian now offers an elegant solution: manage source code, pipelines and container images centrally in one tool.
This feature is now generally available (GA) and offers development teams a modern, integrated solution for container management - with a clear cost structure, less complexity and consistent authorizations.
1. What is Bitbucket Packages?
Bitbucket Packages is a container registry integrated into Bitbucket Cloud that allows you to create, manage and deploy container images directly in your repository. This makes Bitbucket a complete platform for modern software development: code, CI/CD and containers in one tool.
2. Advantages: Fewer tools, more control
Better developer experience: No more constant tool changes. Manage images directly where code and pipelines live.
Cost efficiency: Fewer tools mean lower license and administration costs.
Central authorizations: Access rights for images and tags are automatically based on the repository permissions - fewer misconfigurations, more security.
3. What is available now?
- Container registry at workspace level, with repository-bound permissions
- Push & pull via Docker CLI, authenticated via Atlassian API token
- Image & tag deletion for storage optimization
- Transparent billing & usage insights directly via the workspace settings
